North Korea’s use of brutal prison camps, in which starvation, torture and public execution are norms (according to accounts from those few who are actually able to escape, against all odds) is not exactly new news. It’s hard to know just how much of the public is aware of it, however — the number of North Koreans actively imprisoned in these camps is estimated between 150,000 to 200,000.

Despite continual protests from the Asian American community, theater companies like Towne Theater in Columbia, South Carolina continue to perform the racist musical—and to add insult to injury, this production has an all-white cast. The show is opening during Asian Pacific American Heritage month.

“In the Twin Cities, the problem is not that we haven’t organized against it. The play has been here at least three times and we’ve organized against it, with different strategies each time. Each time, the white theater tells us they’re sorry and they want to be sensitive to the community. They create focus groups, then ignore the focus groups when they advise them not to bring Miss Saigon back.

“All the while, new generations of people of all races go to see this play despite all of our educational teach-ins, our counter-shows and protests, and it’s the one ‘learning experience’ they have about the Vietnam War and Vietnamese people. I was a teenager the first time we organized against it - I’m 38 now and i’m tired of it. We’re still going to organize against it but a lot of this crankiness is with my frustration that there seems to be little to no progress. White supremacy is a machine that keeps grinding, I guess.”

I remember this interview on British television, on some talk and variety show. It was the beginning of Lea Salonga’s big breakthrough and she was great, of course. But I was blown away that they made her do the interview in the peasant costume from Miss Saigon (you can see it all here). Barefoot, ill-fitting drab rags, hair and makeup basically as unglamorous as you can possibly get Lea Salonga. She’s gorgeous anyway, but can you imagine a budding 18-year-old white starlet doing this? No, people get dolled up for these talk shows, designer gown or cocktail dress, hair and makeup all out. When Colm Wilkinson was doing the talk show circuit for the opening of Les Miserables, he didn’t appear dressed up as Jean Valjean in rags, he wore a tuxedo and sang songs in character but in a freaking tux. But Lea Salonga, Miss Saigon? Barefoot peasant in rags. Interesting.
